About EfreakBNC and Efreak

EfreakBNC is a free BNC server run by Efreak. Signups are NOT open. If you’re lucky, you may meet me online and I might be willing to give you an account. Don’t send me emails. Don’t ask me elsewhere. EfreakBNC runs the latest version of ZNC.

A little history:

My name is Daniel. I was born January 6, 1989 in Los Angeles, where I still live today. I like origami, anime, and chat rooms. I modified the theme used for this tumblr to meet my own requirements; its based on the theme NIGHTNIGHT by DEDDY.

I started using IRC chatrooms in high school. The school blocked IRC chats, so I got my first free shell at mtveurope, who no longer offers free shells (but is still recommended) and my first paid shell at frostmud (another recommended host). I was kicked off of frostmud for either cpu abuse, if I recall correctly, and eventually bought a shell at MTVEurope. Later, I have had VPS accounts at Solarspeeds, Santrex, and currently at x10Hosting. I recommend solarspeeds; they’re very nice. I do recommend x10Hosting if you wish to get a vps. I wish I could run a server out of my house, but I simply don’t have the bandwidth (or a nice computer that I can keep on 24/7).

About EfreakBNC:
Shortly after I started running my first bouncer, I gave out a few accounts. Eventually this made way to a form built on phpformgen 2, with a custom form handler that created user configuration files to append to the main ZNC config, and sent emails to me and to the user asking for an account. I would approve the account, append the generated config to the main config, send a confirmation email to the new user, and rehash the server, enabling the new account. At one point I had over 500 users on the server.

Eventually, I decided that all of this was too much work, and I shut down new accounts. Occasionally I will create a new account for someone who asks for one over IRC, but not often. I may in the future decide to open up free signups, but its unlikely. In the meantime, if you personally know a user of EfreakBNC, you can ask them to recommend you for an account, and I might consider it.

I have written several modules for the ZNC bouncer. The one I’m most proud of is a whois module; it allows you to /whois another user on ZNC, and gives you standard information, such as what server they’re connected to, what vhost they’re using, and whether or not they’re connected to ZNC or to IRC. It uses standard IRC numerics, so scripts should be able to parse the replies. Another module I have written is QuitAway, which sets your away message to your quit message when you quit ZNC. For other modules I’ve written, see my userpage and contributions to the ZNC wiki.
